The King’s Chorus and Capella Regalis Men & Boys Choir will present Benjamin Britten’s Saint Nicolas on Friday, December 6 at 8 pm in Saint Mary’s Basilica, Halifax.
Saint Nicolas is a cantata written in nine movements by Benjamin Britten which recounts the life of the legendary Saint Nicolas, the 4th century Bishop of Myra known to us at Santa Clause. Britten composed the piece in 1948, setting to music text which Eric Crozier had written after extensive research into the many and incredible legends of Saint Nicolas.
The boy sopranos of Capella Regalis will join the King’s Chorus in certain movements, at times in the role of young Nicolas, at others in that of the “pickled boys” — three boys who a butcher had chopped up and served to the visiting Bishop Nicolas. Legend has it that when Nicolas realized it, he made them spring back to life!
The concert will also feature tenor soloist NILS BROWN, organist PAUL HALLEY, and a chamber orchestra.
Tickets ($10 student, $20 adult, $40 priority, $75 patron in advance) are available at the King’s Co-op Bookstore (902.422.1270) or online at TicketHalifax: https://www.tickethalifax.com/events/101871340/the-kings-chorus-presents-benjamin-brittens-saint-nicolas.
